Senate terms are staggered, so every two years, nearly one-third of the Senate is up for reelection. It is because of this two-year turnover that every two-years is considered a Congress. Each year of a two-year Congress is considered a session. We are entering the first session of the 113th U. S. Congress, which will commence on January 3, 2013. There are 134 members in the Minnesota House of Representatives serving 2-year terms. There are 67 members in the Minnesota Senate serving 2- or 4-year terms, depending on when they were elected relative to the U.S. census.
